Has being a writer changed the way you watch TV and films?

I think that’s a very interesting question. For me personally, whatever it is I’m watching, I always seem to have my writers hat on, trying to guess what the next line will be, especially if it’s a crime series. I’m quite pleased with myself when I get the next line right, but it sometimes drives my partner mad!

It doesn’t take away from my viewing enjoyment, but with us writers being the inquisitive type, I always seem to have more questions than answers at the end of a film or series.

I’d love to read your views on this, whether you’re a writer or not. Maybe you fancy yourself as a detective, or could you have written that script better than Quentin Tarantino?

It’s true I don’t watch TV in the same way. I like to think I’m alert, intuitive, pro-active and inventive but I’m likely slumped in a chair half asleep. That said, I have learnt a lot about plot, attitudes and show-don’t-tell. Mainly I enjoy the scenery, beautiful citiies, countryside and interiors. It’s all grist to the mill.

I like the honesty of I’m likely asleep 🤣🤣

I have also picked up lots of tips about plot and definitely show don’t tell.

I definitely watch TV and films, as well as read with my writer’s hat on. Sometimes, it’s a positive thought and gives me a good writing ‘tip’. Other times I get frustrated with too many cliches or too obvious/ or convoluted plot.
Thank you for a thought provoking piece, Lynn.

Oh I definitely get frustrated too, especially when I notice plot holes!

I think it’s definitely changed the way I watch TV and films. I’m now far too critical. Graeme is exactly the same so we moan together!

Lynn is the same, Esther. We also moan together!

I do find myself being a little more critical, but I’m in the Yellowstone universe at the moment so not too much. I groan and moan when hero tells heroine to, “Wait here.” She’s never there when he comes back! 😂
