What are your fears as a writer?

I have a few fears as a writer. The main one is that someday I’ll wake up and completely run out of ideas – strange eh? I can’t see it ever happening, but it sits in the back of my mind, nagging like a toothache. I also worry that I will suddenly decide I no longer want to write – perish the thought!

Another fear is AI – the dreaded AI. Should we be worried about it? As writers, I personally think we should be concerned. I have attended many zoom sessions on this subject with the Writers’ Bureau. We’ve discussed it at length and we agree that AI doesn’t have feelings, how can it?

I have lots of conversations in the workplace, where my colleagues’ ages range from seventeen to over sixty, and I can honestly say I’ve never heard any of the ‘older’ staff mention AI. The youngsters – they talk about it non-stop and one even told me how they write and sell songs on social media with the help of AI. Being a musician, I was aghast at the very thought of it.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this subject.

Totally agree re AI. It’s a big worry but my greatest fear is that someone will steal my published work and claim it as theirs. I think about it every time I submit a piece.

That’s a very real fear, Lou and I totally get it. I try not to think about someone stealing my work. To be honest, I don’t really submit that many pieces.

My fear is less about the writing and more the ‘putting myself out there’. Sitting in my room writing away is okay but it’s a whole different set of skills to promote what I’ve written!

I agree Liz. The modern way I guess but a bit scary

Thank you for your post, Liz. I think you’ve done amazingly well with promoting your novel. I’m going to have that to come when mine is eventually published.

My main fear in writing is on the legal side. When I sold a story to a magazine, I had to sign a seven-page contract. I can’t honestly say I undestood half of it and may not even have read every last word. (If the Devil comes by to collect one day, saying I sold my soul along with the film rights, he may have a point).
I also tremble at the idea I might inadvertently plagiarise somebody’s work. That would be so embarrassing!
As for AI, as an EFL teacher I must say this technology can help millions of non-native users of English around the world to express themselves more clearly. we know English is a world language, and in business they won’t worry too much about “feeling”.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Susan. I can’t believe there was such a long contract for a story. I can understand longer contracts with agents and the like, but I guess that’s the world we’re living in today.
Oh the thought plagiarising someone else’s work gives me shivers!
I don’t think I’ll ever be convinced by AI. I’ve noticed posters that social clubs use to advertise my band are AI generated. They do look good, but then I’ll look at another club page and they’ll have exactly the same type of poster – where’s the creativity.

The technological world evolves and we have to evolve along with it. I personally think AI is a boon to writers in a research capacity and allows writers to concentrate on creativity with the research completed for them in a more efficient manner. I do not write poetry, though I appreciate it, and fiddled with AI to come up with poetry from prompts I fed it, but found it too wooden and stilted and not poetic at all.

Thank you for your input, Leonard.
Whilst I agree AI can be a positive thing in a research capacity, I’ve also heard from fellow writers that sometimes AI can often get it wrong when it comes to research. If I use AI for such purposes, I always double-check the facts.
That’s very interesting about the poetry prompts, although not surprising to find the results wooden.

It seems you’re handling your fears very well, Lynn.

Thank you, Tim, I’m certainly trying to!

My main fear is that I won’t finish anything longer than 5,000 words. As my dream is to write at least one novel, and has been since I was ten years old, that is becoming a real fear of mine.
AI can be useful but is untrustworthy so, although I don’t fear it, I certainly don’t trust it.
