What is your reward for finishing a word count/piece of research?

We all need a special treat now and again, don’t we? So do you treat yourself when you’ve reached that daily/weekly word-count? Or when you have finally finished researching that topic that has been on the back-burner for ages?

I think it’s important we reward ourselves when our goals have been achieved. Writing is a lot of blood, sweat and tears and slaving over that script, short story, poem or novel, is hard work and mentally very tiring.

My treat of choice would be going out for a nice meal, but half the time I’m too tired, so I settle for a nice homemade dinner and a good crime drama on one of the dozens of channels they seem to be on these days. Please share how you reward yourself for reaching your goals.

Treats! I keep a record of each period of time spent working on a particular piece writing – just the longer pieces. Date, time, page number and word count. Then I add a smiley sticker! Sometimes I go ages without a treat and go clothes shopping; other times I have a piece of cake and a cup of tea 😊

I always keep track of how many words/pages of my novel I’ve edited, but a couple of years ago I started keeping a record of everything I do writing-wise. Lasty ear when I looked back on 2025, I was surprised at just how much I’d actually done.
Oh, I’m all for a cuppa and cake too!

Oh Lynn, that sounds lovely. So many crime dramas to watch – some good and some not so good!
My treat whenever I’ve achieved a writing goal, is to read. I open up a packet of jelly beans, pour myself a drink, settle down in a comfy chair and transport myself off to another world – desparately trying not to edit what I’m reading!

I agree the crime dramas on television can differ from great, good, to bloody awful! I love jelly beans – not had them for years – but that will change now you’ve reminded me of their existance!
I honestly wish I had more time to read, but I find it difficult to read in the same genre I’m currently writing in.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend, Janice and your jelly beans!

Interesting question, Lynn, because my life largely consists of “treats” – it’s nicer that way – I have my half an hour at breakfast time for my current reading material, and an hour’s TV at the end of the day, sometimes watching a TV chef – that’s very restful and there’s no washing up. Sometimes I reward myself by simply not doing a boring, overdue chore. With luck, I never do it at all.
But none of this really relates to writing. When I’ve finished something, I file it neatly, or occasionally send it out, and then it’s straight on to the next project. The usual reward is a nice cup of tea.

Thank you for your input, Susan. A life of treats sounds great!
I used to be a huge fan of Masterchef, but in recent years have found it too boring, same old formula.
I think I need to set aside some time every day to read, even half an hour. I really admire your constant output of writing, and agree there’s nothing like a cuppa, which I drink far too much of every day.

Rewarding oneself can be really nice, Lynn. My self-reward is a doughnut and cup of coffee.
