This was sent to me by fellow writer, Susan Batten. For me personally, it rings true and I asked Susan if I could share it with my fellow writers on here:
When you start to write, you set yourself apart – from friends, from family and from all the non-writers you meet each day. Don’t fool yourself: once you tell them you’re a writer, they know you’re different. And there’s no turning back.
It’s very hard, painful even, when you can’t be part of their world any more, but what matters to you doesn’t matter to them.
That, I think, is the horrible truth.
Every writer began, like you, learning their craft, hoping for acceptance, fearing rejection. Of course they’ll sympathise – they’ve travelled that road before you got there.
Only other writers can share your triumphs and disappointments, which is why it’s so important to make contact with them and benefit from their support.
So join us in the new world of writing. We understand.
