Do you have a book(s) that you’ll always treasure?

As a writer, I really wish I’d have kept the books I had and read as a child. When I was at school I wanted to be a musician in a band; music was my everything. Being a writer wasn’t on my list, even though I enjoyed writing stories. English was my favourite subject, but for me, school was a very unpleasant experience.

So, unsurprisingly, I have only a few ‘old’ books. One is a biography of Suzi Quatro, written in 1976 by Margaret Mander. I have one from the early eighties: Widows by Lynda La Plante, which was signed by her at a book talk I attended many years later.

Being a huge tennis fan, my favourite is 100 Years of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, written by James Medlycott and published in 1977. As you’ll see from the pic below, it’s a very well read copy that I often pick up and flick through, just for reminiscence.

If you have a favourite book please share it!

The books below were found in a friend’s loft. The Mrs Beeton’s Cookery Book belonged to her mum. The Ladybird Book of British Wild Flowers was awarded for first prize in a bulb growing competition. Those Winnie The Pooh books are wonderful keepsakes. Thank you, Maggie, for allowing me to share these on my blog.

    Hi Lynn,
Interesting question! At home, I best remember an Odham’s Encyclopaedia – the illustrations and photos are etched into my mind, I was always poring over it, lying on the sitting room floor. I cherished a Reader’s Digest World Atlas and their British Isles atlas. These I keep today and sometimes consult, though of course the world map has changed quite a bit!
Otherwise, I haunted the children’s library and worked my way through the shelves, Anne of Green Gables and all the others.

Thank you, Susan for sharing your favourite books. You reminded me I had a set of Encyclopaedia’s as a child, which I absolutely loved.

    Hi Lynn,
Well, as a total book nerd as a kid (nothing has changed) I have many books from my childhood, including Malory Towers and some by Noel Streatfield. Others I replaced when I was older as I’d lost the originals – like Anne of Green Gables. We’ve been packing up our books and it’s so hard to not get sidetracked and start reading them. Wish the print was a bit bigger though.
One book that has special memories is a poetry book and there is one poem in there that I copied out (incorrectly) in a letter to my mum when she was in hospital. I was seven.
    It’s by Anon:
Oh for a book and shady nook
    Either indoors or out
With the green trees whispering overhead
And the street cries all about
Where I may read, all at my ease
Both of the new and old
For a jolly good book whereon to look
Is better to me than gold
Typed here from memory so might be a bit wrong (book is falling to bits and is packed).

      Hi Janice,
What special memories. Thank you for sharing them. I love the poem.

Interesting post there 😀 I have a few books which for some reason were all given to me in 1964 either birthday or Christmas. Robinson Crusoe, Wuthering Heights, and Journey to the Lost Planet. I would have been 8 years old so I guess I read a lot 😂

Great choices, Charlie. I was always given a annual every Christmas when I was a child. Rupert the Bear was a favourite.
Isn’t it great how one person’s memories can spark off memories for others. I’d completely forgotten about the annuals.

Ain’t that the truth, I too had forgotten about Annuals 😂 I still have a Roy Rogers (1963) and Bonanza (1965) and even a Top Cat one 😂😂 I’m certain I got some Rupert Bears too 😀

I still have my Winnie the Pooh book. It was given to me by my Godmother when I was six. I really loved Pooh Bear and his silly antics!

I love Winnie the Pooh now! I do wonder what the next generation will be reading…

Keeping favorite books is good, Lynn. My favorite book is The Complete Western Stories of Elmore Leonard.
