LAKESIDE & HAVERTHWAITE RAILWAY

I have more about our Lake District adventures this week, namely the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Steam Railway, Cumbria.

This was a must-do for us. I love travelling on the steam railway we have here in Tenterden, so when we discovered this one, we just had to give it a try. We weren’t disappointed.

We boarded the train for the thirty minute journey to Lakeside and it was surprisingly packed with tourists. We managed to find a seat with a table and made ourselves comfortable before our train departed. You obviously couldn’t escape the smell from the burning coal and the steam as the train slowly pulled away.

Although it was a short journey, the views were spectacular and I couldn’t think of a better place for a ride on a steam train.

The railway is staffed by a mixture of both volunteers and paid staff and has been since they took it over in 1970. There’s a delightful tea room at Haverthwaite station and to get the best photos, you can go and stand on the bridge along the platform to capture the full beauty of this beautiful train. If ever you visit the Lake District, I would highly recommend a trip on the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway.

I enjoyed reading about this steam train excursion and value this way of bringing history alive, especially for kids.
Thankyou for this Holmes & Watson/ Poirot & Hastings memory.

Thank you, Susan. Talking of Poirot and Hastings, my favourite Agatha Christie film is Murder on the Orient Express.
I must admit I wasn’t too keen on the 2017 re-make of it, with Johnny Depp. Give me the original every time.

They are a great experience, Esther. I love the smell, the noise, everything about them. The volunteers are very knowledgeable too; they have such a passion for what they do. If you ever get the chance to go on a steam railway, you should definitely do it.

    Hi Lynn,
This looks so much fun! I love a steam train.
I used to watch the Flying Scotsman sometimes when it was leaving Kings Cross – gave me goosebumps.
    Lovely article.

Wow Fiona, I would have loved to have seen the Flaying Scotsman!

I took my girls on that exact steam train when they were small. They loved it!
