TO COOK OR NOT TO COOK?

Do you find your writing world incompatible with cooking?

I was always a keen cook and welcomed the family round on a regular basis for tried-and-true recipes or exotic experiments, but these days I’m a klutz.

Writing is to blame! All notion of time disappears at the first keystroke.

I’ve lost count of the times I’ve put some potatoes on to boil while I crack on with my story. When I finally remember them, the potatoes are firmly soldered to the bottom of the pan – I have thrown out pans (plural).

I’ve tried not to start cooking anything if I’m “working” – but then I delay so long I end up with yet another cheese sandwich.

I can’t not write. I can’t not eat. Just tea, I’ve found, doesn’t cut it.

So I wondered if I was walking a lonely road here, and if not, what the solution might be.

(Thank you once again to Susan Batten for this great piece)

I’d never start cooking if I was going to do writing because it would be a disaster! I like to get any food prep done early in the day so I don’t have so much to do later when I’m usually more tired.

You are not alone. ….you need not throw the pans out. Boil them with vinegar in that usually saves the pans .

I was the same – not with writing but with whatever I happened to be doing at the time. Have never got to the throw out pots stage though. In any case a few years ago we were cleaning out my mother in law’s house and there was a kitchen timer that no one else wanted. Rather than see it being put in the Vinnie’s box I kept. BEST THING EVER. For all these years I had been telling myself of course I did not need one. OF COURSE I DO NEED ONE. Simple, easy to use and no more disasters because something has been forgotten!! Happy Cooking and yes, I do love to cook.
