How do you prioritise your writing work?

Maybe I should have asked ‘do you prioritise your writing work?’ We’re all different and I’m sure we have particular ways and means of getting our writing done – whether that writing is for our pleasure or to send off to a magazine or writing competition.

For me personally, I love a list and always write down what I would like to achieve in any given week. I have to be organised and set myself goals that are written down. I get great pleasure in ticking off my achievements!

The best piece of advice I’ve been given – and this absolutely works for me – is always prioritise the important stuff and get that done first. Any spare time left at the end of the day, that’s when you can look at the not so important stuff.

I know it sounds simple, but I found myself working on this blog, sometimes for hours on end, whilst my novel sat there screaming to be edited! I now put my novel at the top of my list and have since edited so much more of it than I ever thought possible.

This sound piece of advice came from Esther Chilton, who many of you on here already know. For those that don’t, check out Ether’s blog – you’ll find it here.

I can’t wait to read how, or if, you prioritise you own writing.

Sound advice from Esther – of course. I put ‘do writing’ in my diary and that’s for working on my 2nd children’s book. I’ve always found it’s best to do the thing you least want to do on a list first – get it over with!

Yes, always sound advice from Esther. That’s good thinking to the least favourite thing first – I sometimes do that when I’m learning new songs for our set in the band.

The advice from Esther is logical to me, Lynn. It’s very nice that you accomplish so much.

I agree, Tim. Esther always gives such good advice.

Like you, Lynn, I love a list. I can spend all the available writing time re-organising one and polishing it up, without getting any further. Now, I have a confession: I know the theory of prioritising the big stuff but these days I admit I cherry pìck – easiest first.

I learnt long ago that you never do everything on a list – and besides, it’s always growing – so I don’t worry about items falling off the list somewhere. As I’m not writing for profit, in the end, it’s no big deal.

You pricked my conscience, though – I’ve just sat down and made a small sewing repair, Nº5 on current list.

I think most of us writers love a list. I think you should do whatever works for you, Susan and you always achieve so much, so you’re doing something right!

I have a confession to make too – if I had ‘sewing repair’ anywhere on a list, it would have fallen off the page and never returned!
